After 35+ years of plumbing Kansas City, we've heard every question. Here are the ones that come up most — answered the same way we'd answer them on the phone. If you don't see what you're looking for, just call us.
💰 Pricing & Fees
Do you charge a service fee or trip charge just to come out?
No — and this is one of the most important things that sets Poor John's apart. We do not charge a service call fee, diagnostic fee, or trip charge just to show up at your door. You only pay for the work performed. Many plumbing companies in Kansas City charge $49–$111 just to pull in the driveway before they've done anything. We don't.
What is flat-rate pricing and why does it matter to me?
Flat-rate pricing means you get a fixed price for the complete job before work begins — not an hourly rate that keeps climbing while the technician is in your home. With Poor John's, we tell you the price upfront and that's what you pay. No surprises at the end. We're the only plumber in Kansas City that posts our prices publicly at
poorjohns.com/prices — you can see costs before you even call.
How much does it cost to replace a water heater in Kansas City?
Tank water heater replacement in Kansas City typically runs $1,750–$1,950 depending on the size (40 vs 50 gallon), fuel type (gas vs electric), and any code updates required during installation. Tankless water heater installation runs higher — typically $3,750–$4,750 depending on the unit and installation complexity.
How much does drain cleaning cost in Kansas City?
For current drain cleaning rates, see our
prices page — no need to call just to get a number.
How much does sewer line repair cost in Kansas City?
Sewer repair costs vary significantly depending on the problem — a simple root clearing is very different from a full line replacement. We always start with a camera inspection to diagnose exactly what's wrong before quoting repair costs. Once we know what we're dealing with, we give you a flat-rate price before any work begins. Call us to discuss your situation and we'll give you an honest assessment.
Do you offer financing for large plumbing jobs?
Yes. We offer financing through Wisetack — apply in about 1 minute with no impact to your credit score. 0% APR options are available for qualified customers, and you can finance projects from $500 up to $25,000. Visit our
financing page to prequalify or learn more.
📅 Service & Scheduling
Do you offer same-day plumbing service?
We do our best to offer same-day service when our schedule allows. For urgent situations — no hot water, actively leaking pipes, backed-up drains — call us directly at (816) 455-5420 (MO) or (913) 422-7101 (KS) and we'll get you on the schedule as quickly as possible.
What are your business hours?
Our regular business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Call us at (816) 455-5420 for Missouri or (913) 422-7101 for Kansas to schedule service or ask about availability.
How far in advance do I need to schedule?
It depends on the season and what's going on. Routine jobs like faucet repairs and water heater replacements are usually scheduled within a few days. Urgent issues like active leaks or no hot water we try to handle same-day or next-day. Spring and winter tend to be busier — call early if you can.
Do I need to be home for the appointment?
For most plumbing work, yes — someone needs to be home to provide access and approve the work before we begin. If there are special circumstances, call us and we'll work out the details.

Are you licensed in both Missouri and Kansas?

🔧 Common Plumbing Questions
How do I know if I need to repair or replace my water heater?
A good rule of thumb: if your water heater is under 8 years old and has a specific problem (bad element, faulty thermostat, pilot light issue), repair is usually worth it. If it's 10+ years old, has rust-colored water, is leaking from the tank, or is having multiple problems, replacement is usually the better investment. We'll give you an honest recommendation either way — we won't push you toward a new unit if a repair will do the job.
Why does my drain keep clogging even after I've had it cleaned?
Recurring clogs are often a sign of a bigger problem — a partial collapse, root intrusion, or pipe bellying (where a section of pipe has sagged and creates a low point where debris collects). A camera inspection can tell us exactly what's causing it. If it's been cleaned multiple times and keeps coming back, a camera scope is the right next step before spending more on cleaning.
What are signs my sewer line might need attention?
Watch for: multiple drains backing up at the same time, gurgling sounds from toilets or drains, sewage odors inside or outside the home, slow drains throughout the house (not just one fixture), or wet spots in your yard with no rain. Any of these can indicate a sewer line problem. A camera inspection is the definitive way to know what's going on.
Is my water pressure normal?
Normal residential water pressure in Kansas City runs between 40–80 PSI. If you're consistently below 40 PSI you'll notice weak flow at fixtures. If you're above 80 PSI it can stress your pipes and appliances over time. Low pressure can be caused by a failing pressure regulator, partially closed shutoff valves, or buildup in older pipes. We can diagnose and fix water pressure problems — call and describe what you're experiencing.
My toilet runs constantly. Is that a big deal?
Yes — a running toilet can waste 200 gallons of water per day or more, which translates to $50–$100 added to your monthly water bill. The most common cause is a worn flapper or faulty fill valve, both of which are inexpensive repairs. It's worth fixing quickly.
Should I get a tankless water heater?
Tankless water heaters have real advantages — they never run out of hot water, they're more energy efficient, and they last longer (20+ years vs 10–12 for a tank). The tradeoffs are higher upfront cost and they require proper sizing for your home's demand. They're a great choice for many Kansas City homes, especially larger households or anyone replacing an aging tank unit. We install both and can walk you through which makes more sense for your situation. See our dedicated
tankless water heater page for more detail.
Why should I choose Poor John's over other Kansas City plumbers?
A few things that genuinely set us apart: we don't charge a service fee to come out (most KC plumbers charge $49–$111 just to show up), we post our flat-rate prices publicly online so you can compare before calling, we've been family-owned since 1988, and we're licensed in both Missouri and Kansas. With 386 Google reviews at 4.9 stars and a BBB A+ rating, our track record speaks for itself. We're not the cheapest and we're not the most expensive — we're the most transparent.
