We fix it β€” without replacing it if we don't have to. Honest, flat-rate pricing.

Toilet Problems Rarely Fix Themselves β€” We'll Get It Right the First Time

A running toilet, a rocking toilet, a toilet that won't flush properly β€” these problems range from mildly annoying to genuinely expensive if ignored. A running toilet alone can waste 200 gallons of water per day, adding real money to your water bill every month. Poor John's handles all toilet repairs and replacements with flat-rate pricing β€” you'll know the cost before we touch anything.

Common Toilet Problems We Fix

Running Toilet

The most common toilet problem in Kansas City homes. A toilet that runs constantly or cycles on and off by itself is usually caused by a worn flapper that's no longer creating a proper seal, a faulty fill valve that won't shut off at the correct water level, or a deteriorated flush valve seat. Beyond being annoying, a running toilet can waste thousands of gallons per month and spike your water bill significantly. A simple dye test (a few drops of food coloring in the tank) will confirm if your toilet is running β€” if color appears in the bowl without flushing, you have a leak.

Toilet Won't Flush or Flushes Weakly

Weak flush or incomplete flush is usually a flush valve issue β€” the flapper isn't opening fully, the water level in the tank is too low, or the rim jets around the inside of the bowl are clogged with mineral deposits. In older KC homes with hard water, rim jet clogging is a common cause of poor flush performance. In some cases a weak flush indicates a partial blockage in the drain line rather than a tank issue.

Toilet Leaking at the Base

Water appearing around the base of a toilet after flushing almost always means a failed wax seal β€” the gasket that seals the toilet to the floor drain flange. This needs to be fixed promptly, as the water can damage subfloor material if allowed to continue. A wax seal replacement requires pulling the toilet and reinstalling it with a new seal.

Rocking or Unstable Toilet

A toilet that rocks or shifts when you sit on it has either loose floor bolts or a deteriorated floor flange. Left unfixed, a rocking toilet will eventually break the wax seal and cause a leak. If the floor around the toilet feels soft, there may already be subfloor damage from a slow leak.

Toilet Won't Stop Running After Flushing

If the toilet runs for a long time after flushing before cutting off, the fill valve is either set too high, worn out, or partially clogged. A fill valve replacement is a straightforward repair.

Toilet Replacement

Sometimes repair isn't the right answer β€” particularly on very old toilets, toilets that have been repaired multiple times, or when a customer wants to upgrade to a more efficient model. Older toilets use 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush. Modern WaterSense toilets use 1.28 gallons per flush, which saves significant water over a year β€” an important consideration given Kansas City's hard water and water rates.

If you supply the toilet, Poor John's labor for installation is $375. We'll disconnect and haul away the old unit. See our full prices page for all toilet repair flat-rate pricing.
