Water Service Line Problems: What Happens When the Main Goes Wrong
The water service line is the pipe that runs underground from the city water main in the street to your home. It's the single pipe that supplies all of the water used throughout your house β every faucet, toilet, appliance, and shower. When a water service line fails, the effects range from reduced water pressure throughout the home to water pooling in the yard to a complete loss of water service. Poor John's diagnoses and repairs water service line problems across Kansas City MO and KS.
Signs of a Water Service Line Problem
- Low water pressure throughout the entire house β When pressure is low at every fixture simultaneously, the problem is upstream of the house β either the service line, the main shutoff valve, or the pressure reducing valve (PRV). A service line restriction or partial failure often presents as gradually declining pressure over time.
- Unexplained increase in water bills β A water service line leak underground won't be visible inside the house, but it will show up on your water bill. If your usage hasn't changed but your bill spiked, a service line leak is one of the first things to investigate.
- Wet spots or soft ground in the yard β Water from a leaking service line saturates the soil above and around the break. You may notice puddles after dry weather, unusually soft ground, or areas of unusually lush and green grass along the path from the street to your house.
- Discolored water or sediment β Rusty or dirty water at all fixtures simultaneously (not just the hot) can indicate a deteriorating service line, particularly in older KC homes with original galvanized steel or lead service lines.
- Sound of running water when nothing is on β If you can hear water movement in the walls or floor when all fixtures are off, there's water flowing somewhere it shouldn't be.
Water Service Line Materials in Kansas City
The material of your water service line depends largely on when your home was built:
- Lead β Homes built before 1950 in older Kansas City neighborhoods may have original lead service lines. Lead lines should be replaced β not just for water quality reasons, but because old lead pipe is brittle and prone to failure. Kansas City has ongoing programs related to lead service line replacement; your utility can tell you if your home is on the list.
- Galvanized steel β Common in homes built from the 1930s through the 1960s. Galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside out, progressively narrowing the flow capacity and eventually failing. Low pressure and discolored water are the typical symptoms in older KC homes with galvanized service lines.
- Copper β The standard for several decades, copper service lines are durable but can develop pinhole leaks from soil corrosion or aggressive water chemistry. Kansas City's water is generally not highly aggressive toward copper, but older copper lines can develop problems at joints and fittings.
- PVC/HDPE plastic β Modern service line material used in new construction and replacements. Highly durable, corrosion-resistant, and flexible enough to handle ground movement.
Main Shutoff Valve and PRV
The main shutoff valve controls all water flow into the house. It's typically located where the service line enters the home β near the water meter in the basement or utility area. Shutoff valves can fail to close completely after decades without use, leak at the packing, or seize open. A valve that won't fully shut off makes any plumbing repair inside the house significantly more difficult.
The pressure reducing valve (PRV) steps down the city water pressure (which can run 80β100 PSI) to a household-appropriate level (typically 50β60 PSI). A failed PRV can cause high pressure throughout the house β which is hard on appliances, fixtures, and the water heater β or insufficient pressure if it fails in the closed position. PRV replacement at Poor John's ranges from $500 to $600 (all-in). Main shutoff valve replacement ranges from $475 to $650. See the prices page for full details.
Outside Hose Bibs (Spigots)
Outdoor hose bibs take abuse β from freeze damage in KC winters, from extended use with hoses, and simply from age. A hose bib that drips, won't shut off fully, or has damaged threads needs repair or replacement before it wastes water or causes foundation moisture issues. Frost-free hose bibs prevent winter freeze damage and are the standard for replacement in Kansas City.
